HeartFlow Analysis
Newport Hospital is the first hospital in Rhode Island to implement HeartFlow Analysis, a noninvasive diagnostic tool for heart disease. This first of its kind technology diagnoses coronary artery disease by taking patient data from a noninvasive coronary CTA and creating a digital 3D model of the coronary arteries. It uses a computer algorithm to simulate blood flow and assess the impact of blockages on the heart.
After only a few hours of calculation, HeartFlow sends the information to a secure web interface where physicians can see the extent of a patient’s arterial blockage. This information will determine if the patient requires a more invasive treatment.
This diagnostic tool is groundbreaking because:
- Other diagnostic techniques have low accuracy rates or are invasive
- HeartFlow eliminates the need for a cardiac catheterization, an invasive diagnostic procedure
- HeartFlow reduces cost of care by 26%
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. When the arteries leading to the heart narrow or become blocked, blood flow to the heart may be reduced, causing chest pain and potentially fatal heart attacks. HeartFlow Analysis adds functional evaluation to CT angiograms that results in improved accuracy in diagnosing the causes of chest pain. The early intervention opportunity that this provides can save lives.
